About
Rustie McCusker, Boston MA
My parents ran away from Northern Ireland to
escape the Trouble’s and to
build and run the Chimney Corner
Nightclub in Gibraltar,
where I was born with a full head of red hair.
Over a lifetime, mom and dad ran
3 nightclubs, 3 restaurants, 3 pubs, 2 hotels
a cafe and a hospitality company,
and raised two children.
I lived in 10 different countries
at 68 different addresses
- 11 addresses by the time I was 10.
I grew up in a hotel.
I’ve lived in 3 of the six Celtic nations.
I did terrible at 7 schools.
Failed college. Twice.
Ran the family pub at 18.
By 21, it was sold.
I moved to the Isle of Man to
run two nightclubs and for 10 years
the hospitality at The worlds Famous
Isle of Man TT Motorbike Festival.
Then I moved to live in Dublin,
to work in a bar - then lost my job.
The unemployment said:
You gotta re-train.
So I became a graphic designer.
Produced a newspaper in Dublin for 6 years.
Then got married and moved to South Boston.
Where we raised two beautiful souls.
Working as a production designer.
Diagnosed with ADHD/Dyslexia.
Separated and stayed close.
Had many addresses. Ran out of work
Because print is being over taken by digital
This is where I am now.
And technically homeless & unemployed.
Since I was 10 I have been making art.
It’s a compulsion - an obsession - a devotion.
I made art for me.
I explored, adventured and
played in lines, shapes and colours.
I absorbed art from library books.
I was deeply inspired by what I saw.
But I had my own ideas.
Many of them. 100’s.
In fact well over 3,000 to date.
With who knows how many fresh
ideas awaiting my focus.
It may sound odd
I didn’t want to be an artist.
I wanted to make art.
For arts sake.
My devotion.
My Joy!
It never crossed my mind
that other folk might like it.
I did think it might be fun to show
But I never had the courage
or capability until now.
Thanx Jodie & Mike!
Today - May The Fourth 26’
for the first time
It is my delight to finally share
my secret joy with you
From this dyslexic mindful Manx
Irish British Gibraltarian creative Celt!
I hope you enjoy my work!
